Types of Canada Spouse Visa

Inland Sponsorship

Your spouse is already in Canada on a valid status. They can apply for an Open Work Permit immediately while the PR application is processed. Faster if the spouse is already there.

Outland Sponsorship

Your spouse applies from India (outside Canada). Processing happens at the visa office. Often faster and allows the sponsor to appeal if refused. Most Indian couples use this route.

Common-law Partner

For unmarried couples who have lived together for at least 12 continuous months. Same benefits as spousal sponsorship. Relationship must be documented thoroughly.

Canada Spouse Visa — FAQs

Outland spousal sponsorship typically takes 12–18 months. Inland sponsorship takes 12–24 months but includes an Open Work Permit. Processing times vary by visa office. Dr. Shruti Mehta's team tracks current processing times and plans applications accordingly.

Yes. For inland applications, your spouse can get an Open Work Permit (OWP) while the PR application is pending. This allows full-time work anywhere in Canada. Outland applicants can apply for a temporary work permit separately.

Key documents include: marriage certificate, joint photos, communication records, financial proof, Sponsor's PR/Citizenship, police clearance certificates, medical exam, and a genuine relationship declaration. Dr. Shruti Mehta's team helps prepare a complete, error-free application.

Unlike other sponsorship categories, spousal/partner/child sponsorship has NO income requirement for sponsors in most cases. However, sponsors must sign an undertaking to support the sponsored person for 3 years.
